The Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex, popularly known as the "Hamalir," stands as the most prominent monument of Armenian modernist architecture and a true landmark of Yerevan. Perched on the Tsitsernakaberd hill, its structural silhouette evokes the image of a great bird spreading its wings or a blossoming flower. Opened in 1983, the complex remains a world-class architectural and engineering achievement. The project was envisioned by a team of distinguished architects: Arthur Tarkhanyan, Spartak Khachikyan, and Hrachya Poghosyan.
A remarkable engineering feature of the building is its rotating seating stand, which allows for the seamless integration of two large halls within seconds to accommodate massive events. The architectural language of the complex, with its bold forms and powerful concrete constructions, represents the pinnacle of Soviet modernism. It serves as a premier venue for international concerts, sports championships, and state forums. Since 1999, the complex has been named after Karen Demirchyan, the prominent Armenian statesman whose personal dedication was instrumental in bringing this monumental project to life.
