Republic of Armenia: Geographical Location Climate and Administrative Structure

Geographical Location and Landscape

The Republic of Armenia is situated in Western Asia in the northeastern part of the Armenian Highlands. It is a landlocked mountainous country serving as a strategic and cultural crossroads connecting Europe and Asia. Armenia borders Georgia to the north Azerbaijan to the east Iran to the south and Turkey to the west.

About 90% of the country's territory lies at an altitude of more than 1000 meters above sea level which creates exceptional landscape diversity ranging from the fertile valleys of the Ararat Plain to the deep gorges of Debed and the majestic high mountains of Syunik. The highest point is the four-peaked Mount Aragats (4090 m) and the lowest is the Debed riverbed (375 m).

The Land of the Sun and Four Seasons

Armenia is known as the "Sunny Country." Thanks to its high altitude and dry climate there are more than 300 sunny days a year. The climate is dry and healthy which allows tourists to easily endure the summer heat especially in the lowlands where summers are long and bright.

In the mountainous regions winter is mild but snowy making Armenia a wonderful center for winter tourism (Tsaghkadzor Ashotsk). Autumn and spring in Armenia are true cultural and natural celebrations with mild temperatures and an incredible play of colors.
