Republic Square is the primary architectural ensemble of Yerevan and the definitive symbol of the city, envisioned by the legendary architect Alexander Tamanyan. Construction began in 1924 and was fully realized by 1958. The square features a unique oval shape, with its central part adorned by an exquisite pattern resembling a traditional stone carpet. It is surrounded by five majestic buildings crafted from pink and white tuff, forming a unified and harmonious composition.
Each of the buildings lining the square is characterized by grand arches, elegant colonnades, and intricate stone carvings that reflect medieval Armenian motifs. The ensemble includes the History Museum and the National Gallery of Armenia, the iconic clock tower, and various administrative and cultural structures. In front of the complex lie the famous "Singing Fountains," which captivate thousands of visitors every evening with their synchronized light and music performances. The distinctive pink hue of the square gives Yerevan a unique warmth and charm, earning it the worldwide nickname, the "Pink City."
