Erebuni (782 BCE) is the indisputable evidence of Armenian statehood and the founding of Yerevan. Located on Arin Berd hill in the Erebuni district of Yerevan this strategic structure was not only a defensive outpost but also the primary northern administrative and economic hub of the Kingdom of Urartu.
1. Historical Origins: The Declaration of Argishti
The basalt slab confirming the fortress's foundation contains the message of King Argishti I son of Menua known in science as Yerevan’s "birth certificate."
The Cuneiform Script states: "By the greatness of the God Khaldi Argishti son of Menua built this mighty fortress and proclaimed it Erebuni for the glory of the land of Biainili (Urartu) and to instill fear among enemy countries. Argishti says: The land was a desert and I accomplished great works here."
2. Architectural Structure of the Fortress
The layout of Erebuni showcases the skill of Urartian architects in adapting to mountainous terrain.
Palatial Complex: The royal palace located in the central part was adorned with rich frescoes. It featured spacious colonnaded halls used for important state deliberations.
Temple Section: At the highest point of the fortress stood the temple of the God Khaldi the spiritual center of the state.
Economic Storage: Massive karases (clay jars with capacities up to 500-600 liters) were excavated intended for the long-term storage of wine oil and grain.
3. Erebuni Historical-Archaeological Reserve-Museum
Founded in 1968 the museum is one of Armenia’s most significant archaeological treasuries representing the wealth of Urartian civilization.
Fresco Masterpieces: The museum’s pride is the monumental frescoes depicting deities sacred trees hunting and ritual scenes.
Crafted Artifacts: On display are bronze figurines weapons jewelry and clay vessels which testify to the advanced level of Urartian metallurgy and pottery.
