Axel Bakunts House-Museum: A Living Monument of Syunik’s Literature and Traditions

The Axel Bakunts House-Museum is located in the heart of Goris and stands as one of Armenia's most cherished cultural landmarks. Established in 1968 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Armenian writer prose writer and public figure Axel Bakunts (Alexander Tevosyan) the museum is situated in the very house where he was born and spent his early years. The building itself is an exquisite example of late 19th-century Goris architecture featuring sturdy stone walls a traditional wooden balcony and a charming courtyard that has preserved the authentic atmosphere and spirit of the Syunik region.


The museum’s collection consists of approximately 500 primary exhibits that meticulously detail the writer's life and his creative journey. Visitors can explore Bakunts’ personal belongings original manuscripts letters rare photographs and first-edition books published during his lifetime. The memorial room is particularly moving as it has been preserved exactly as it was when the writer lived there. Beyond its literary significance the museum also serves as an invaluable ethnographic hub showcasing the daily life furniture and household items of Goris residents from the turn of the 20th century. In the courtyard a monument to the writer stands among fruit trees creating a serene and reflective environment. A visit to this museum offers more than just a historical account of the author of "The Pheasant" and "Alpine Violet"; it allows guests to feel the powerful connection between the land and the literature that defined Bakunts’ tragic yet brilliant legacy.
