Built in the 7th century Zvartnots Cathedral (Saint Gregory) is one of the gems of Armenian architecture which amazed the world of its time with its grandeur and innovative solutions. Founded by Catholicos Nerses III the Builder this three-tiered structure is distinguished by its circular ground plan and magnificent carvings—especially the motifs of pomegranates and grape clusters. Although the cathedral collapsed in the 10th century due to an earthquake its majestic ruins still testify to the high engineering and artistic mind of medieval Armenia. Zvartnots is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
