The pulpulak is one of the most beloved and unique elements of Armenian urban culture. These small water fountains found in almost every courtyard and street of Yerevan and throughout Armenia symbolize Armenian hospitality and the veneration of water. When drinking from a pulpulak people instinctively bow their heads which is a gesture of respect toward the water and the memory of those in whose honor these fountains are often built. Many pulpulaks are adorned with delicate stone carvings and national ornaments becoming miniature architectural monuments that bring life to the city.
