Tatev Monastery: The Fortress of Armenian Spiritual Rebirth and Science Perched on the high cliffs of Syunik the Tatev monastic complex is one of the most powerful symbols of medieval Armenian architecture and culture. Founded in the 9th century this monastery was for centuries not only a spiritual center but also a vital hub for science and education. It was home to the famous University of Tatev where the greatest scientists and miniaturists of the time studied and worked led by Grigor Tatevatsi. One of the complex's unique features is the "Gavazan" (Pendulous Column) considered an engineering marvel due to its movable structure. Today Tatev is one of the most attractive tourist destinations accessible by the world-famous "Wings of Tatev" aerial tramway.
