The St. Mary’s (Surb Astvatsatsin) Church of Nork (founded in the 18th century, reconstructed in the late 20th century) is the spiritual symbol of one of Yerevan’s oldest districts, Nork. Situated on a hill, it holds a dominant position over the surrounding area. The church is noted for its high construction quality and restrained yet expressive decoration, making it one of Yerevan's most important historical and cultural monuments.

1. Historical Overview and Destruction

The history of the church dates back to the 18th century, when it was built with the funds of the famous Nork dynasties, the Ter-Avetikyans.

  • The 1679 Earthquake: Like many other monuments in Yerevan, the old Nork church was completely destroyed by the great earthquake, though it was later rebuilt as a vaulted basilica.

  • The Soviet Era: In the 1930s, as a result of atheist policies, the church was demolished. For decades, only its foundations and a few fragments remained, which became a place of pilgrimage for local residents.

2. Reconstruction and Architectural Composition

The revival of the church began in 1991 and was completed in 1995 through the philanthropy of Moscow-based businessman Sarkis Gevorgyan.

  • Composition: The reconstructed church represents the central-domed type, faithful to classical Armenian architecture. Polished orange and pink tuff was used for the building, giving the temple a warm and bright appearance.

  • Belfry: An elegant belfry is built above the western entrance of the church, completing its upward-reaching silhouette.

  • Internal Decoration: The prayer hall is characterized by simplicity and spiritual tranquility. The altar is decorated with icons by contemporary Armenian artists.

3. Topographical Significance and Surroundings

The church is located in the Nork-Marash administrative district. Due to its high elevation, a panoramic view of Yerevan and Mount Ararat opens up from the church courtyard.

  • Monuments and Khachkars: Various khachkars (cross-stones) of different eras and styles are placed in the church courtyard, some of which were brought from other locations or crafted during the years of reconstruction.
