Saint Mesrop Mashtots is the most significant figure in Armenian history, whose genius ensured the survival of the Armenian people throughout millennia. By creating the Armenian alphabet in 405 AD, Mashtots did not only lay the foundation for Armenian literature and education; he forged a powerful spiritual armor that protected the nation from assimilation and disappearance. His mission was born from the profound realization that without its own script and language, a nation is destined for spiritual captivity.
Mashtots' scientific and spiritual feat is often described as "Divine Inspiration." In collaboration with Catholicos Sahak Parthev and King Vramshapuh, he carried out extensive educational activities across the land. Immediately following the creation of the alphabet, Mashtots and his disciples undertook the translation of the Bible, which has been rightfully acclaimed as the "Queen of Translations." Mashtots was also the founder of the first Armenian schools and one of the earliest authors of spiritual hymns (sharakan). His tomb, located in Oshakan, remains a sacred site and a place of pilgrimage for Armenians worldwide.
