Havuts Tar: The Hidden Medieval Wonder of Khosrov Reserve

Perched on a high slope of the Garni gorge within the Khosrov State Reserve lies one of the major spiritual and cultural centers of medieval Armenia-Havuts Tar. This monastic complex flourished during the 11th-13th centuries and is famous for its magnificent fortress-like walls and the Holy Savior (Surb Amenaprkich) Church. According to tradition many relics including the Amenaprkich cross were kept here. Although the monastery was heavily damaged by the devastating 1679 earthquake its ruined walls and exquisite carvings still fascinate visitors with their majesty. The hiking trail to Havuts Tar offers breathtaking views of the Garni gorge and the Azat River valley.
