The Azat Reservoir is one of Armenia's most stunning and visually captivating water bodies located in the Ararat region along the lower reaches of the Azat River. Constructed in the 1970s it serves as a vital strategic asset whose waters are primarily used for irrigating the vast orchards and fertile lands of the Ararat Valley. The reservoir is framed by the Yeranos Mountains whose reddish and yellowish hues combined with the deep blue of the water create an otherworldly landscape that is often compared to the scenery of Mars. The reservoir has a total capacity of approximately 70 million cubic meters and plays a crucial role in the local agricultural ecosystem.
In recent years the Azat Reservoir has become a top destination for tourists photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. It is particularly breathtaking during the spring and early summer when the water level is high and the surrounding mountains are perfectly reflected in the still mirror-like surface. The area is now a hub for activities such as SUP boarding boat tours and lakeside picnics. This mountainous landscape is part of the Azat River Canyon which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its unique geological diversity and natural beauty. Visitors can also enjoy fishing or simply find peace away from the city's hustle. The proximity of the reservoir to the villages of Lanjazat and Garni allows travelers to combine their visit with explorations of other historical and natural landmarks in the region making it a perfect spot for a weekend getaway.
