Anania Shirakatsi was a brilliant 7th-century scientist whose works are the cornerstones of the Armenian Renaissance. He is the founder of natural sciences in Armenia specializing in astronomy mathematics geography and chronology. As early as the Early Middle Ages Shirakatsi asserted that the Earth is spherical and located at the center of the universe and that the Milky Way consists of countless stars. His "Ashkharhatsuyts" (Geography) and arithmetic textbooks remained primary sources of education for centuries. Shirakatsi was a bridge between the knowledge of the ancient world and the new era remaining an eternal torch of Armenian scientific thought.
